President Julius Maada Bio has officially commissioned a 1MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Moyamba District, a key milestone under the 7 District Electrification Project aimed at transforming Sierra Leone’s energy landscape. The solar project, co-funded by the World Bank and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), marks a significant achievement in the government's ongoing efforts to expand access to clean and reliable electricity across the country.

As Minister of Energy, President Bio is leading a broad national push to strengthen the sector, supported by Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, Chairman of the Energy Governance Coordination Group (EGCG). The EGCG plays a strategic role in coordinating and guiding energy initiatives under the president’s leadership.

In his remarks at the commissioning ceremony, President Bio expressed gratitude to development partners for their steadfast support. “This project and many other energy initiatives are part of my vision to increase access to energy, which is essential for improving human capital development, health care, education, and job creation in Sierra Leone,” he stated. He also urged the residents of Moyamba to “make good use of the energy, and to protect and maintain the infrastructure as the government continues to provide energy for productive uses.”

Dr. Yumkella also extended heartfelt thanks to the World Bank and UNOPS for their timely delivery of the project, highlighting the collaborative spirit that made it possible. He praised the continuity of effort within the Ministry of Energy, saying, “We must also acknowledge the past administration at the Ministry of Energy for laying the groundwork that contributed to this achievement.”

Addressing the broader challenges of energy reform, Dr. Yumkella noted, “We don’t believe in quick fixes. It takes time and sustained effort to solve the energy crisis as a whole. This project is a step in the right direction, but there is more work to be done.”

"Over 40 years we have had no access to electricity. Today, Moyamba District is celebrating a major milestone. Thank you President Bio, and thank you Dr. Yumkella and the team," said PC Gulama of Kayamba Chiefdom, Moyamba District.

The Moyamba solar plant is expected to significantly improve electricity access in the district, powering homes, businesses, schools, and health centers. It is part of a

broader commitment by the Bio-led government to drive sustainable development through energy investment and innovation. Representatives from both the World Bank and UNOPS expressed thanks and delight over supporting this project and assured of their continued commitments to the energy sector.
