Energy Sector Lead, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, has defended his decision to consistently highlight pipeline projects and progress in the energy sector, saying it is part of a deliberate strategy to promote transparency, public ownership, and long-term accountability.

Speaking during an interview on AYV, Dr. Yumkella stated that keeping the public informed about upcoming and ongoing energy projects is essential for institutional accountability.

“If you don’t know what’s in the pipeline, how will you hold anyone accountable?” he said. “These projects are not for me, they are for the people. And they take years to complete, often outlasting any single administration.”

Dr. Yumkella emphasized that by making project information public, including funding sources, timelines, and contractors, the public is better equipped to monitor progress and ensure continuity even after he leaves office.

“I may not be in this position for long, but if the people know the details, they can hold my successors to account,” he added.

He also referenced the upcoming launch of the Mission 300 Compact, a five-year energy plan expected to be signed by the President and widely distributed to the public. “We will publish it so everyone owns it, not just the government,” he noted.

Dismissing criticisms about his frequent media appearances, Dr. Yumkella said transparency is not a choice but a necessity for sustainable development. “There are no quick fixes. Real solutions require time, planning, and the people’s involvement,” he concluded.
