Freetown has reached a historic milestone in its electricity supply with 72 megawatts (MW) successfully transmitted to the capital city for the first time. This achievement, confirmed today by Hon. Alhaji Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella, marks a major step forward in Sierra Leon’s energy journey.
Dr. Yumkella congratulated colleagues at the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) and the Electricity Generation and Transmission Company (EGTC) for their role in making this breakthrough possible. He noted that the Macoth Solar facility contributed 10 MW to the total supply, affirming the growing role of renewable energy in Sierra Leone’s energy mix.
“For the first time, I see that we are at 72 MW in Freetown today. Macoth Solar sent in 10 MW. Congratulations to our colleagues at EDSA and EGTC” Dr. Yumkella said.
This development reflects sustained efforts to stabilize and expand our electricity network. For residents in Freetown, the increase means improved reliability of power, reduced dependence on back up generators, and the promise of greater economic activity driven by stable energy access.
The Macoth Solar contribution also signals progress toward integrating clean energy into the national grid. With global emphasis on climate resilience and sustainable growth, Sierra Leone’s shift toward solar and other renewables places the country in alignment with international best practices
With the direction, support and guidance of HE President, Julius Maada Bio, the ministry of energy and its partners continue to invest in transmission lines, distribution infrastructure, and renewable energy projects. Today’s milestone serves as proof of progress and as motivation to push further.
This proves what coordinated efforts, technical expertise, and political commitment can deliver for Sierra Leoneans. If sustained, this level of power generation could reshape daily life and unlock new opportunities for businesses, households, and institutions across Freetown and beyond.
